Introduction to Playing the Didgeridoo!
In this workshop, students will be introduced to the fundamental techniques of didgeridoo playing. These include producing the basic drone, shaping and manipulating the fundamental note, and taking the first steps toward circular breathing.
***Plastic “starter” pvc didgeridoos will be provided***
All ages and skill levels are welcome.
Daniel Orlansky has been playing the didgeridoo for 30 years, both in America and Europe. He has performed in many locations, notably at Berkley College of Music, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Boston Jazz Festival, the Cambridge River Festival, and for the Boston Ballet and many local dance companies.
The Australian Aboriginal didgeridoo is one of the oldest musical instruments in the world. Often associated with heightened awareness and trance states, anthropologists believe it may have been used in Aboriginal ceremonial practices for as long as 40,000 years.
For both the player and the listener, the didgeridoo is a deeply meditative instrument. Through circular breathing — breathing in and out simultaneously — along with a range of vocal and tonguing techniques, players create a continuous drone rich in overtones, textures, and rhythmic complexity. The strong emphasis on deep, supported breathing gives didgeridoo playing many of the benefits of breath therapy; in fact, it has been shown to help alleviate and, in some cases, improve asthma and sleep apnea.
